Lukas Ortlieb can think of several situations off the top of his head that clearly demonstrate the optimization potential of a tiltrotator: Among other things, he recalls the excavation of a swimming pool on a private property – a construction site with a difficult access situation for which he would have had to use not only a large and a small excavator, but also a shovel and spade without a tiltrotator. With Tiltrotator, he can do all the work from the fence, with just one excavator, without awkward maneuvers and without compacting the soil. Even when precisely modeling driveways around manhole covers or unloading and stacking construction materials, maneuvering and moving the excavator costs an enormous amount of unproductive time.
The Ortliebs have therefore always been open to innovative machinery solutions that enable leaner processes.

THE SOLUTION
TILTROTATOR
When Lukas Ortlieb experienced an OilQuick tiltrotator live for the first time during a demonstration, he immediately recognized the added value of the “excavator wrist” for his own business. Being able to rotate attachments 360 degrees and tilt them 45 degrees opened up completely new possibilities. For example, buckets can be positioned at virtually any angle without having to move the excavator. The Ortliebs got down to business and in October 2020 the time had come: a tiltrotator – the mechanical model OQTR-E19 as a sandwich – was added to the Ortlieb fleet on loan and could be tested under real construction site conditions.
Today, the company’s own OilQuick tiltrotator is an integral part of the machine fleet: the OQTR-E19 with buckets of different widths, pallet forks, levelling bars and sweeper brushes. In September 2021, the machine was retrofitted with a hydraulic sandwich so that the machine operators no longer have to get out of the cab to change tools. The advantage of the sandwich attachment is that the tiltrotator can also be put down completely if necessary – for example, if the excavator’s breakout force needs to be fully utilized. Lukas Ortlieb did not find the handling of tilt and rotation difficult to learn: “Sure, you have to practice for two to three weeks until you get the hang of it. But you become more skilled every day and discover more and more possible applications for your own construction site situations. A tiltrotator fundamentally changes the way you excavate.”

You can hear the enthusiasm in Ludwig Ortlieb’s voice when he talks about the tiltrotator – and he admits with a grin that a little bit of “play instinct” also contributed to the purchase decision. Father and son have not regretted the investment for a second, as the tiltrotator not only saves working and machine time every day, but also reduces fuel consumption and relieves employees of laborious maneuvering and heavy manual work. The Ortliebs have never had an argumentation problem with the higher hourly machine rate for the tiltrotator: a small demonstration of the maneuverable and precise working method is enough to convince clients of the advantages of using the tiltrotator. Lukas Ortlieb is already planning how he can get even more out of his tiltrotator: he would like to add a hydraulic pallet fork to his fleet.

THINKING AHEAD TOGETHER
The collaboration between Ortlieb and OilQuick goes back a long way: Ludwig Ortlieb was one of the first German customers of OilQuick quick couplers in the 1990s and has remained loyal to the brand. The technology-enthusiastic junior boss Lukas Ortlieb regularly visits the OilQuick company premises in Steindorf, just 10 minutes away, to find out about new products and functions and to test innovations. His feedback is also incorporated into the further development of the tiltrotators, among other things.
