EXPERIENCE IN HANDLING
The importance of personal interaction between manufacturers and dealers is demonstrated by the collaboration between Ascendum and OilQuick. When Patrick Stellmach from Ascendum got talking to OilQuick Managing Director Franz Schauer at the MAWEV SHOW in St. Pölten in spring 2018, he had a challenge in his luggage: a new Sennebogen material handler for his customer Danubia Speicherei was to be equipped with a fully hydraulic quick-change system for oscillating attachments – a pilot project due to the size required.
Unlike many other suppliers, OilQuick already had special quick couplers for material handlers in its range at the time with the OQC series and Patrick Stellmach was impressed by its expertise. The next steps were agreed during the trade fair.

After the appointment it was clear: Danubia Speicherei wants this! “

THE CHALLENGE
CUSTOM-MADEXXL
The Danubia storage facility at the Danube inland port in Enns, Austria, is a trimodal transshipment point. Along the quay wall, which is over 300 meters long, ships are loaded and unloaded with bulk and general cargo of all kinds, both loose and in big bags and on pallets. After the solution with two cable-operated port cranes had become outdated and the handling volume increased at the same time, planning began in 2015 together with Ascendum for the commissioning of a giant Sennebogen material handler.
For maximum efficiency, Danubia Speicherei wanted a quick-change system with load hooks and various gripper applications from the outset – fully hydraulic, so that it could switch between the various attachments at high speed and without manual pin insertion. In 2018, a project partner was found in OilQuick, which was able to complete the planning for the XXL stick end of the material handler in prototype construction.

“Everyone involved worked perfectly hand in hand and we and, above all, our customer are highly satisfied with OilQuick, both technically and organizationally. The project was something very special for me as Ascendum’s sales representative.
In our sales region, far away from the major seaports, a material handler of this size is unique – to my knowledge, the Sennebogen 895E is not available at any other inland port in the world. This was not a classic machine sale, but plant engineering.”

THE SOLUTION
FLEXIBLE OILQUICK PROTOTYPING
The project then developed unexpected momentum when Sennebogen presented the brand new 895E model in spring 2019: The world’s largest material handler to date doubled the lifting capacity for general cargo to 50 tons compared to the 8400 model ordered – an invaluable advantage for Danubia Speicherei. After a factory tour at Sennebogen in Straubing, the decision was therefore made at short notice to upgrade to the 895E, with consequences for the quick coupler: the prototype was redimensioned and equipped with a more powerful slewing gear.
The construction phase went smoothly and after final acceptance at the Sennebogen plant in June 2020, 18 trucks transported the huge material handler to its new home on the Danube.

SUCCESS
CUSTOMER SATISFACTION 360°
The handling machine is proving itself in everyday use: with the help of the new system, Danubia Speicherei handles a handling volume of 950,000 tons per year. In addition to speed, reliability is particularly important, because the high costs of the ships’ time in port mean that downtimes must be kept to a minimum. Ascendum’s service team takes care of maintenance and also has all the important spare parts for the OilQuick quick coupler in stock. The Danubia Speicherei fitters are also trained and equipped with an OilQuick service kit. A major advantage: Although the Proto type OQC90 as a whole is a custom-made product, all important components are standard components of the OQ90 excavator series.
“Our leap of faith has paid off and the positive experiences in the project for Danubia Speicherei have led to excellent cooperation with OilQuick. We are currently working on a number of joint projects in the tiltrotator sector, for example,” says Patrick Stellmach.

THINKING AHEAD TOGETHER
It is a central part of the OilQuick philosophy to think beyond the traditional excavator tool carrier and open up the potential of the quick coupler for new areas of application such as material handling. New machines, new tools, new sizes – the further developments of the OilQuick portfolio are always based on specific problem areas. It does not matter whether the prototype leads to series production, it is always about finding the perfect solution for the respective customer. Cooperation partners such as Patrick Stellmach from Ascendum play an important key role here as communicators between customer requirements and OilQuick designers.
